Great Helmet

 

A large, often flat topped and cylindrical helmet popularized during the era of the Crusades. The helmet completely enclosed the head and could be worn over a chain coif as well as iron or steel skull caps. The far superior protection that the great helmet provides over other forms of head wear comes at a cost.

The very narrow openings for the eyes creates a very restricted field of vision for the wearer, mostly eliminating peripheral vision.

The Templar Knight Great Helm by Marto is a replica reproduction of style of helmet that was typically used by the crusaders, and the Knights Templar, for the whole duration of the Crusades. Also called a pot helm, given the resemblance to a pot,This helm is made from steel and is enriched by a brass cross, which denotes a knight in service to a religious order.

Sugar Loaf Helmet

 

Taking its name from the conical loaves in which sugar was formerly sold, this Helm was popular during the Crusades. Providing full head protection, its conical top deflected blows much more efficiently than its flat-topped predecessors.

Our 300 Spartan helmet is based on the ones the Spartans wore in Frank Miller’s comic book, and Miller consulted during their production. The helmet is made of steel with a brass coating.

Pigface bascinet Helmet

 

The Pigface Bascinet helmet or Hounskull (from the German “Hound’s Hood”) was a popular helmet from the 14th Century as was worn by both English and French knights at famous battles such as Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356).

A depiction of this style of bascinet can be seen on the monumental brass of Sir Hugh Hastings in St Mary’s Church in Elsing. This Pigface Bascinet replica is hand crafted in polished steel and brass and has a removable pivoting visor like the original.

Phrygian Nasal Helmet

 

The Nasal Helm was originally designed in the early 9th century, but soon evolved into its own. It was the most plentiful helmet used in the early middle ages, and was used well into the late middle ages as well.

Though originally used as complete protection, it was later paired with a great helm or barrel helm so that when the heavier was removed it would provide protection. It is was also commonly used by archers, as it gave great visibility and mobility.
